ARTIST'S STATEMENT

In the garden, I find myself thinking about how man manipulates nature. Are hybridised flowers natural or not? I realise that I have always tried to make natural objects - shells or plants - but of course this is impossible for me to do. So, rather than exercising total control over the outcome, I work with the metal to create forms such as curves or cracks. Anodised aluminium offers unique opportunities for surface colour and texture, and I enjoy its structural limitations, finding myself forced to find original solutions to forming and assembling the work.

I am interested too in the mathematical order of organic forms. I begin with balanced geometrical proportions - though these will be stretched and distorted - and use sequences to create structures. The resulting jewellery comes alive when it then finds a wearer, forming a sensual relationship with her and becoming part of the expression of herself.

TECHNIQUES
By the intelligent and sensitive use of colour, mark, texture, design and form, Jane Adam transforms a commonplace material — aluminium - into wearable, sensual and seemingly precious pieces of jewellery.

Anodising is an electro-chemical process, which gives the metal a hard, transparent surface layer of aluminium oxide. This layer is colourless, but can permanently absorb certain dyes. Jane's current work is coloured with thickened dyestuffs applied by her own original hand printing techniques to create layers of textured marks which blend together so that each piece is unique. They are immersion dyed to give a solid background colour, visible on the reverse of the piece. They are then stretched to craze the surface, giving a shimmery, iridescent effect. The colour is chemically sealed into the surface and cannot chip, flake or peel.
