Mark HartungARTIST'S STATEMENTUntrained artists and their direct, honest approach to making their work has had an influence on my way of working. I've romanticized the image of the untrained artist toiling away in their workshop creating some object that they feel has a reason to exist without any aspirations for the world of art. Beyond their naiveté regarding art history and the contemporary art scene, I'm also inspired by the simple materials, methods, and approaches these artist use to make their work.Another influence on my work has been my fascination with toys from the turn, and first half of this century, especially tin toys. Often, I feel the ingenuity that went into the design of the tin toys is overshadowed by the simplistic nature of the toys themselves. I have a great respect for the simple mechanics involved in tin toys and toys in general. Lacking the sophisticated machinery used in industry to make toys has actually lead me to more simplistic methods to produce my own work.
